Jon, you've probably seen this already, but Stephen Walt recently posted a handy all-purpose list of rationalizations for situations just like this, similar to your 'Why the ______s Hate the ______s.'

If apologists everywhere adopted this coding system, these articles would be a lot shorter. ("Oh yeah? Well, #8, #10, and #20!")

Yes, Chris, we definitely need some kind of hasbara bingo card to go with the one for ID Creationism and Tim Dunlop's version for Global Warming Skeptics.

There'd be a box for:
"The only democracy in the Middle East."
"They want to 'wipe Israel off the map.'"
"What would you do if someone was firing thousands of missiles at New Mexico?"
"Hamas seized power in a coup."
"Palestinians elected a terrorist organisation so the deserve what they get." (should be a way to give extra points if commentator uses both these last two.)
"Most ethical army in the world."
"How come you never bitch about Sudan?"
"Give back Manhattan."
Etc...

The "outrage" over Darfur is overblown and based on made up "facts". I believe it is a little proxy war between Israel and China.

The worst example of killing in the world today is DR Congo, but no oil there, so no outrage.

There were just such articles in 1986, and no doubt in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, only apparently A. Barton Hinkle wasn't writing them. Sad transformation.
