That's a hoot. Billy Graham has quite a White House history. I mean, has anybody else ever been consulted about who gets to go to heaven!

People who have been forced to listen to Alan Dershowitz's definition of anti-semitism too much may not know how prevalent the real thing used to be, especially in conservative circles back in the day when Tricky Dick and Reverend Billy were younguns. What Nixon and Billy Graham said was pretty close to mainstream not too long before they said it. Joseph Bendersky's The Jewish Threat, Anti-semitic Politics of the U.S. Army (2000) might be an eye-opener for some on that point. Both Ike and George Marshall were protoges and great admirers of General Van Horn Moseley, who attacked FDR regularly and gave quite a few speeches that sounded an awful lot like Goebbels wrote them. Lots of the ugly little statements made by the icons of the past gets excised. To me, it's no different from Stalin removing Trotsky from photos taken during the Revolution.

The funny* thing is, he still sounds more sane than his replacements in the evangelical movement. It's not usual for Bible-thumping Baptist evangelists to repeatedly express concerns about nuclear war, for example. So I guess I'd rather that Billy Graham's record be unreasonably burnished than Nixon's or Reagan's. Or Huckabee's, for more relevant reasons.

The clip linked by grimmy really surprised me. Old Rummy was articulate, and so suave! I think it would have been hard for people watching him on TV to realize what a nasty, ruthless, power-hungry prick he was. Imagine that.

The clip grimmy linked precedes the Halloween Massacre of 1975(see wikipedia), a palace coup that seems like ancient history these days.
It was a continuation of the inter-GOP fratricidal civil war against detente. Rummy's cold-warriors won.

So by 1975, Rummy was actually much more than a wunderkind. Along with Poppy Bush and the young turk Cheney, he was a point man in the charge that culminated in the final defeat of the Rockefeller/Kissinger detente faction of the GOP. Of course, all the old Cold Warriors on the Committee for a Clear and Present Danger, and in the CIA and military, were behind them. That was the real power.

Still is, though maybe not so concentrated in the CIA. There's been some dispersion, and some privatization, of course.

Yeah, I wasn't sure about that, either – Graham talks about them going out of business, and Nixon does agree - although "fit to live" suggested to me that he meant the people themselves, and he was a vindictive mother. But maybe he'd settle for bombing their offices after he did that to Brookings. And Cambodia…

Interesting, but not surprising, that the MSM propagandizes America's past as well as present. If Americans really knew what was going on in their country, you'd hear heads exploding from sea to shining sea.
