CBS News Edits Out Billy Graham Reference To "Synagogue Of Satan"

Yesterday CBS ran a story about the latest batch of Nixon tapes made public. And they included a section of a February 21, 1973 conversation with Billy Graham that showed Nixon at his psycho best:

CBS: In another of the candid and sometimes coarse conversations released today, the President muses about anti-Semitism. He's talking to Evangelist Billy Graham - and worries about reaction to the Washington visit of Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir—because Israel has just shot down a Libyan passenger plane.

NIXON: This anti-Semitism is stronger than we think, ya know. It's unfortunate, but this has happened to the Jews, happened in Spain, it happened in Germany, it's happening, and now it's gonna happen in America if these people don't start behaving. It may be they have a death wish, that's been the problem with our Jewish friends for centuries.

GRAHAM: Well, they've always been through the Bible at least, God's timepiece. He has judged them from generation to generation and yet used them and they've kept their identity.

What do you think about Graham's response there? True, he didn't stand up to Nixon's rambling insanity, but at least he deflected it. He comes out looking pretty good!

Too bad this is how the conversation actually went (mp3)

NIXON: The thing that you've really got to emphasize to him, Billy, is that this anti-Semitism is strongly than we think, you know. It's unfortunate, but this has happened to the Jews, it happened in Spain, it happened in Germany, it's happening—now it's going to happen in America if these people don't start behaving.

GRAHAM: Well, you know I told you one time that the bible talks about two kinds of Jews. One is called the Synagogue of Satan. They're the ones putting out the pornographic literature. They're the ones putting out these obscene films.

[three minutes of talking]

NIXON: It may be they have a death wish, that's been the problem with our Jewish friends for centuries.

GRAHAM: Well, they've always been through the Bible at least, God's timepiece. He has judged them from generation to generation and yet used them and they've kept their identity.

P.S. CBS is also wrong that Nixon was talking about anti-Semitism being generated by the shooting down of the Libyan plane. Nixon was actually responded to Graham being angry about a rabbi criticizing a new attempt at widespread evangelism.

The whole thing is well worth listening to if you're a connoisseur of the psychosis of the people who run this planet. My favorite part is the repeated tongue baths Graham bestows on Nixon, assuring him the country loves him and he may well be the greatest president in history.

Damned transcript reads like something Terry Southern dreamed up.

Dr. Strangelove: "It would not be difficult, mein Fuhrer! Er, I mean, mein President! (gloved left hand jerks skyward in an involuntary Nazi salute.)

Billy Graham = Billy Sunday

a prejudiced, puerile populist "preacher" paving paths of pompous pugnacity pretending at purity

but are there still people out there who don't know this about Graham, or likewise about Milhouse?

That's a hoot. Billy Graham has quite a White House history. I mean, has anybody else ever been consulted about who gets to go to heaven!
The Bush inter-family debate on that important question, with Reverend Billy refereeing, is one of my favorites, since we're on the topic of the "psychosis of the people who run the planet":

http://www.jewishworldreview.com/1298/bush1.asp

People who have been forced to listen to Alan Dershowitz's definition of anti-semitism too much may not know how prevalent the real thing used to be, especially in conservative circles back in the day when Tricky Dick and Reverend Billy were younguns. What Nixon and Billy Graham said was pretty close to mainstream not too long before they said it. Joseph Bendersky's The Jewish Threat, Anti-semitic Politics of the U.S. Army (2000) might be an eye-opener for some on that point. Both Ike and George Marshall were protoges and great admirers of General Van Horn Moseley, who attacked FDR regularly and gave quite a few speeches that sounded an awful lot like Goebbels wrote them. Lots of the ugly little statements made by the icons of the past gets excised. To me, it's no different from Stalin removing Trotsky from photos taken during the Revolution.

I just dusted off "Our Gang" and will shortly beging the re-reading.

I thought Synagogue of Satan was a Jewish heavy metal band. If it isn't, it should be.

Graham lost all credibility way back during the Vietnam War when he said god was on our side.

Those little yellow bastards needed to be taught a righteous lesson from our just and jealous god.

And Billy was there to present it.

Nixon may have been the one, but Billy was a number two.

The funny* thing is, he still sounds more sane than his replacements in the evangelical movement. It's not usual for Bible-thumping Baptist evangelists to repeatedly express concerns about nuclear war, for example. So I guess I'd rather that Billy Graham's record be unreasonably burnished than Nixon's or Reagan's. Or Huckabee's, for more relevant reasons.

*And by "funny" I don't mean "funny ha-ha" but "funny major bubonic plague outbreak."

Nixon also says, "they don't deserve to live" shortly after Graham's "Synagogue of Satan." It's apparently in reference to the evil pornographers running Time and Newsweek who covered smut (Graham says his wife cancelled both subscriptions) but didn't put Nixon's inauguration on the cover.

Yes, I was going to include that, but it sounded like Nixon meant the publications rather than the individuals running them.

a 1975 TV interview with Rumsfeld, then considered a wunderkind:

Since it's audio tape day and Rummy has come up, here's a link to a clip from 1971 of nixon telling haldeman that rummy is a "ruthless little bastard"
http://tapes.millercenter.virginia.edu/clips/rmn_rumsfeld.html

The clip linked by grimmy really surprised me. Old Rummy was articulate, and so suave! I think it would have been hard for people watching him on TV to realize what a nasty, ruthless, power-hungry prick he was. Imagine that.

The clip grimmy linked precedes the Halloween Massacre of 1975(see wikipedia), a palace coup that seems like ancient history these days.
It was a continuation of the inter-GOP fratricidal civil war against detente. Rummy's cold-warriors won.

So by 1975, Rummy was actually much more than a wunderkind. Along with Poppy Bush and the young turk Cheney, he was a point man in the charge that culminated in the final defeat of the Rockefeller/Kissinger detente faction of the GOP. Of course, all the old Cold Warriors on the Committee for a Clear and Present Danger, and in the CIA and military, were behind them. That was the real power.

Still is, though maybe not so concentrated in the CIA. There's been some dispersion, and some privatization, of course.

Yeah, I wasn't sure about that, either – Graham talks about them going out of business, and Nixon does agree - although "fit to live" suggested to me that he meant the people themselves, and he was a vindictive mother. But maybe he'd settle for bombing their offices after he did that to Brookings. And Cambodia…

Interesting, but not surprising, that the MSM propagandizes America's past as well as present. If Americans really knew what was going on in their country, you'd hear heads exploding from sea to shining sea.

I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer . . . be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. . . . Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee. Revelation 2:9-10, 3:9.
