Forty Years Later, King Still Silenced
40 Years Later, (The Late) Martin Luther King Still Silenced
by Jeff CohenSoon after Martin Luther King’s birthday became a federal holiday in 1986, I began prodding mainstream media to cover the dramatic story of King’s last year as he campaigned militantly against U.S. foreign and economic policy. Most of his last speeches were recorded. But year after year, corporate networks have refused to air the tapes.
Last night NBC Nightly anchor Brian Williams enthused over new color footage of King that adorned its coverage of the 40th anniversary of the assassination. The report focused on the last phase of King’s life. But the same old blinders were in place.
NBC showed young working class whites in Chicago taunting King. But there was no mention of how elite media had taunted King in his last year. In 1967 and ‘68, mainstream media saw Rev. King a bit like they now see Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

The assassinations of the sixties did not completely kill what was happening. What was needed for that job was the endless censorship of what those people said and did, and the repeated attacks on their character.
Character assassinations. And silence.
Frank Wisner called it his "mighty Wurlitzer." The Church Committee found 400 CIA "journalists." How many more were there? Are there? When Bob Woodward was the ace investigative reporter to the world, why didn't anyone mention that he'd recently moved from his top-secret clearance role at ONI (and through that work Woodward now claims to have "met" Deep Throat). When people like Ben Bradlee, Cokie Roberts and Gloria Steinem have documented histories in CIA operations is it all that surprising how many of us have been led down the garden path on so many issues? How much of our history is just the gruel that our masters have fed us?
Yeah, it's really amazing how our media just doesn't cover the full story of MLK. If people keep asking about it expect someone to write a book saying that King also slept with Marilyn Monroe and had the FBI kill her.
